HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) is the result of a corrosive reaction between carbon steel and hydrogen sulphide. Wet hydrogen sulphide (H2S) cracking in steel has been a problem in petroleum refining and upstream oil and gas processing since the 1950s. Working conditions where wet H2S prevails are often described as sour service conditions and the term sour gas can be also be used in this context.

HIC Resistant Steel Plate is used by boiler makers and fabricators when Hydrogen Induced Cracking is a big risk.The most common grades of HIC resistant steel plate is A516 – to ASME/ASTM standards. It will generally be certified to grades 60, 65 and 70 so one plate can meet the requirements for any of the three grades A516 60/65/70 + HIC
